According to 49 CFR 178.970, the bottom lift test requires the following:
* Applicability: It applies to all Large Packaging design types that are designed to be lifted from the base.
* Preparation: Load the Large Packaging with an evenly distributed weight equal to 1.25 times its maximum permissible gross mass.
* Test Method: Raise and lower the Large Packaging twice using a lift truck. The forks must be centrally positioned, spaced at three-quarters of the dimension of the side of entry (unless the entry points are fixed), and must penetrate three-quarters of the direction of entry.
* Passing Criteria: The Large Packaging passes if there is no permanent deformation that makes it unsafe for transport and no loss of contents.
