Michigan motor carrier compliance
Official sources checked October 2, 2026.
Michigan intrastate operating authority is different from federal USDOT registration, federal operating authority, vehicle registration, and fuel-tax credentials. Check each requirement for the actual operation.
Michigan intrastate for-hire authority
The Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) administers intrastate for-hire operating authority under Michigan’s Motor Carrier Act. Its Regulatory and Credentialing Section also administers UCR for interstate motor carriers. Use the agency’s instructions to determine applicability and apply through the official portal.

Questions to establish scope
- Are you carrying your own property, carrying for hire, carrying passengers, or transporting hazardous material?
- Is the shipment part of interstate commerce even if your own leg stays in Michigan?
- What are the actual vehicle and combination weights and the ratings?
- Which Michigan authority, registration, insurance, and renewal requirements apply?
This page does not adopt a special-operation weight threshold as a blanket exemption for every Michigan carrier.
