What are IRP apportioned plates?
Editorial correction · sources checked 2026-10-02
Short answer
IRP is the International Registration Plan, a vehicle-registration agreement among participating jurisdictions. Apportioned registration allocates registration fees under the Plan. It is separate from IFTA fuel tax and is not governed by 29 CFR 2590.716-8, a health-plan dispute rule.
In plain English
A qualifying carrier applies through its base jurisdiction for apportioned registration and receives registration credentials for covered vehicles. Qualification, exemptions, distance records, and fees are determined by the current IRP Plan and the base jurisdiction's instructions. IRP credentials do not replace operating authority, insurance, fuel-tax credentials, or every permit an operation may need.
What to do
• Check the IRP Plan and your base jurisdiction's registration office for applicability.
• Confirm the vehicle's weight, configuration, use, and jurisdictions of travel.
• Keep the required distance records and renew through the base jurisdiction.
