As Ask X3, your fleet-compliance assistant, here is what 49 CFR 178.608 requires for motor carriers:

Under 49 CFR 178.608, your packagings must be capable of withstanding a specific vibration test without any rupture or leakage. To meet this standard, the test must follow these practical steps:

1. Select Samples: Take three randomly selected sample packagings, filled and closed just as they would be for shipment.

2. Setup: Place the three samples on a vibrating platform with a vertical or rotary double-amplitude of one inch. Constrain the packages horizontally so they do not fall off, but leave them free to move vertically, bounce, and rotate.

3. Run the Test: Vibrate the packages for one hour at a frequency high enough that the packages raise off the platform, allowing a piece of material about 1.6 mm (0.063 inches) thick (like paperboard or steel strapping) to pass underneath any package.

4. Inspect for Leaks: Right after the one-hour vibration period, take each package off the platform, turn it on its side, and check it for any signs of leakage. *(Note: Other equally effective methods may be used if approved by the Associate Administrator).*

5. Passing Criteria: To pass, the packages must show no rupture, leakage, deterioration that could hurt transportation safety, or distortion that reduces packaging strength.
