As your fleet-compliance assistant, here is what 49 CFR 178.819 requires for qualifying rigid Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs)—and ensuring flexible IBCs are capable of withstanding—the vibration test:
* Preparation: Take a randomly selected sample IBC, fill and close it just as you would for shipment (IBCs meant for liquids can be filled with water).
* Setup: Place the filled IBC on a vibrating platform that has a vertical or rotary double-amplitude (peak-to-peak displacement) of one inch. Restrain the IBC horizontally so it stays on the platform, but leave it free to move vertically and bounce.
* Execution: Run the test for one hour. The vibration frequency must be set so that the package lifts off the platform enough that a piece of material roughly 1.6 mm (0.063 inches) thick—such as steel strapping or paperboard—can slide freely between the bottom of the IBC and the platform (or use another equally effective method).
* Passing Grade: The IBC successfully passes the vibration test under 49 CFR 178.819 if it shows no signs of rupture or leakage.
