What does 49 CFR 178.985 (Vibration test) require?

Based on 49 CFR 178.985, the vibration test requirements for rigid and flexible Large Packaging design types are as follows:
* General Requirement: All rigid and flexible Large Packaging design types must be capable of withstanding the vibration test.
* Test Preparation: You must select a sample Large Packaging at random, fill it, and close it just as you would for shipment. If the Large Packaging is intended for liquids, you may use water as the filling material.
* Platform Setup: Place the sample Large Packaging on a vibrating platform with a vertical or rotary double-amplitude (peak-to-peak displacement) of one inch. You must constrain the package horizontally to keep it from falling off the platform, but it must remain free to move vertically and bounce.
* Test Duration and Frequency: Run the test for one hour. The vibration frequency must be adjusted so that the package is raised off the platform enough that a piece of material approximately 1.6-mm (0.063-inch) thick (such as steel strapping or paperboard) can pass freely between the bottom of the Large Packaging and the platform. (Alternatively, other methods that are at least equally effective may be used, as referenced in § 178.801(i)).
* Passing Criterion: Your Large Packaging passes the vibration test under 49 CFR 178.985 if there is no rupture or leakage.
