What does 49 CFR 178.1055 (Stacking test) require?

According to 49 CFR 178.1055, the stacking test requires the following practical steps for qualifying your Flexible Bulk Containers:

1. Preparation: Load every Flexible Bulk Container design type up to its maximum permissible gross mass.

2. Setup: Place the container upright on its base on level, hard ground.

3. Load Application: Apply a uniformly distributed superimposed test load that equals four times the design type's maximum gross weight. You must maintain this load for at least 24 hours. You can apply the load using one of two methods:

* Stack four identical Flexible Bulk Containers on top of the test container, with each of those four also loaded to its maximum permissible gross mass; or

* Place the calculated test load weight onto either a flat plate or a reproduction of the container's base, and stack that onto the test container.

4. Passing Criteria: To pass, the container must show no deterioration that would make it unsafe for transportation, and there must be no loss of contents either during the test or after the test load is removed.
