Based on 49 CFR 178.915, the general standards for Large Packagings require the following for your motor-carrier operations:

* Environmental Protection: Each Large Packaging must resist or be protected from environmental deterioration. If you are hauling solid hazardous materials, the packaging must be both sift-proof and water-resistant.

* Service Equipment: Position or protect all service equipment to minimize the potential loss of contents if the packaging is damaged during handling and transport.

* Structural Integrity and Pressure: The entire Large Packaging—including its attachments, service equipment, and structural parts—must be designed to handle internal pressures and the stresses of normal handling and transport without losing any hazardous materials.

* Stacking: If your Large Packaging is meant to be stacked, it must be specifically designed for stacking.

* Lifting and Securing: Any features used for lifting or securing the Large Packaging must be strong enough to withstand normal handling and transport conditions without failing or becoming grossly distorted. They must also be positioned so they do not cause undue stress on any part of the packaging.

* Framework Packagings: If your Large Packaging consists of smaller packagings housed within a framework, it must be built so that the framework does not damage the inner packagings, and the inner packagings are securely retained at all times.

* Lifting Design: Large Packaging design types must be constructed so they can be either bottom-lifted or top-lifted, as specified in §§ 178.970 and 178.975.
