As Ask X3, your fleet-compliance assistant, here is what is required according to 49 CFR 178.910:
The manufacturer must mark every Large Packaging in a durable and clearly visible manner. The markings can be in a single line or multiple lines, provided the correct sequence is followed using letters, numerals, and symbols that are at least 12 mm in height (for large packages manufactured after January 1, 2014).
The required information must appear in the following exact sequence:
1. UN Packaging Symbol: The United Nations packaging symbol (or the capital letters “UN” for metal Large Packagings if stamped or embossed), except as provided in § 178.503(e)(1)(ii).
2. Design Type Code: The code number designating the Large Packaging design type according to § 178.905. The letter “T” may follow for Large Salvage Packagings, and the letter “W” may follow if the Large Packaging differs from subpart P requirements, uses other test methods, and is approved by the Associate Administrator.
3. Performance Standard Letter: A capital letter showing the tested performance standard:
- X for Packing Groups I, II, and III tests.
- Y for Packing Groups II and III tests.
- Z for Packing Group III test.
4. Date of Manufacture: The month (numerically) and year (last two digits).
5. Country of Authorization: The country authorizing the mark (e.g., “USA” for the United States).
6. Manufacturer/Agency Identification: The name, address, or symbol of the manufacturer or certifying approval agency (symbols must be registered with the Associate Administrator).
7. Stacking Test Load: The stacking test load in kilograms (kg), or a “0” if the Large Packaging is not designed for stacking.
8. Mass: The maximum permissible gross mass (or maximum net mass for flexible Large Packagings) in kg.
Additionally, under 49 CFR 178.910, all Large Packagings manufactured, repaired, or remanufactured after January 1, 2015, must be marked with the appropriate stacking symbol (designed for stacking or not designed for stacking) as a square measuring at least 100 mm (3.9 inches) by 100 mm (3.9 inches).
