According to 49 CFR 178.702, Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) code designations are made up of specific characters in a set order:

1. Two numerals that indicate the IBC design type based on whether it is rigid or flexible, and whether it is used for solids, liquids discharged by gravity, or liquids discharged under pressure greater than 10 kPa (1.45 psig).

2. Capital letter(s) that indicate the material of the IBC (for example, "A" for steel, "H" for plastic, etc.). For composite IBCs, two capital letters are used in sequence after the numeral to show the material of the inner receptacle first, followed by the material of the outer packaging.

3. A numeral (when specified in an individual section) that indicates the category of the intermediate bulk container.
