What does 49 CFR 173.310 (Exceptions for radiation detectors) require?

Generated guidance. Confirm the source and its applicability before you act. How we check sources.

According to 49 CFR 173.310, radiation detectors (and related sensors, electron tubes, or ionization chambers) that contain only Division 2.2 gases in non-refillable cylinders are excepted from standard specification packaging. Except when transported by air, they are also excepted from labeling and placarding requirements, provided they are designed, packaged, and transported according to the following practical rules:

* Container Design: They must be single-trip, hermetically sealed, welded metal inside containers that will not fragment if impacted.

* Pressure Limits: The design pressure must not exceed 5.00 MPa (725 psig), and the capacity must not exceed 405 fluid ounces (731 cubic inches).

* Burst Pressure:

* If equipped with a pressure relief device, the burst pressure must be at least three times the design pressure.

* If *not* equipped with a pressure relief device, the burst pressure must be at least four times the design pressure.

* Outer Packaging: They must be shipped in a strong outer packaging that can withstand a 1.2-meter (4-foot) drop test without breaking the detector or rupturing the outer package. (If shipped as part of other equipment, that equipment must use strong outer packaging or provide an equivalent level of protection).

* Emergency Response: Shipping documents and emergency response phone numbers must provide information identifying which receptacles lack a pressure relief device and give appropriate guidance for fire exposure.

* Shipping Papers: Transport under this section must be noted on your shipping papers, unless the capacity of the detector receptacles is 50 ml (1.7 oz.) or less and paragraphs (a) through (d) are met, in which case they are exempt from shipping papers and all other requirements of the subchapter.
