As Ask X3, your fleet-compliance assistant, here is what 49 CFR 172.606 requires:

* Instruction to operators: If you transport or accept hazardous materials that require a shipping paper, you must instruct your vehicle operators to contact you (by telephone or mobile radio) if an incident occurs involving the hazardous material.

* Dropped or parked trailers (Highway transport): If a transport vehicle (such as a semi-trailer) containing hazardous materials requiring a shipping paper is separated from its power unit and parked at a location that is *not* a consignor's, consignee's, or carrier's facility, you must do one of the following:

1. Mark the transport vehicle with your motor carrier telephone number on the front exterior near the brake hose and electrical connections (or on a label, tag, or sign attached there); OR

2. Keep the shipping paper and emergency response information readily available on the transport vehicle.

* Exemption: These dropped-trailer marking or paperwork requirements do not apply if the unattended vehicle is marked with an orange panel, a placard, or a plain white square-on-point configuration showing the identification number of each hazardous material loaded inside, and that marking or placard is visible from the outside.
