According to 49 CFR 172.328, cargo tanks must meet the following requirements:
* Identification Numbers: If a cargo tank is not already marked, the person offering the hazardous material must provide the identification numbers on placards or affix orange panels containing the numbers prior to or at the time the material is offered for transportation.
* Hidden Cargo Tanks: If a cargo tank is transported on or in a transport vehicle or freight container and its required identification number marking is not normally visible during transport, the transport vehicle or freight container must be marked on each side and each end with the correct identification number. If the cargo tank is permanently installed within an enclosed cargo body, the identification number only needs to be displayed on each side and end of the cargo tank that is visible when accessed.
* Gases: Cargo tanks transporting a Class 2 material (gases) must be marked on each side and each end with either the proper shipping name or an appropriate common name (e.g., “Refrigerant Gas”) in lettering at least 50 mm (2.0 inches) high (except for certain nurse tanks).
* QT/NQT Markings: MC 330 and MC 331 cargo tanks must be marked near the specification plate in letters at least 50 mm (2.0 inches) high with "QT" (if made of quenched and tempered steel) or "NQT" (if made of other steel).
* Emergency Shutoff: On-vehicle manually-activated remote shutoff devices must be identified with the marking “Emergency Shutoff” in contrasting letters at least 0.75 inches high, located immediately adjacent to the means of closure.
* Unodorized LPG: Cargo tanks containing unodorized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) must be legibly marked "NON-ODORIZED" or "NOT ODORIZED" on two opposing sides near the proper shipping name or near the placards.
