Based on 49 CFR 172.326, the requirements for portable tanks containing hazardous materials are:
* Shipping Name: You must legibly mark the proper shipping name (from the § 172.101 table) on two opposing sides of the portable tank. For vessel transport, the minimum height for this marking is 65 mm (2.5 inches), except for portable tanks with a capacity under 3,000 L (792.52 gallons), which can reduce the size to at least 12 mm (0.47 inches).
* Owner's Name: The name of the owner (or the lessee, if applicable) must be displayed on the portable tank.
* Identification Numbers:
* If the identification numbers on the portable tank are not visible, the transport vehicle or freight container carrying it must be marked on each side and each end with the correct identification number.
* If you offer a portable tank to a motor carrier and its identification numbers are not visible from the outside of the transport vehicle or freight container, you must provide the motor carrier with the required identification numbers (on placards, orange panels, or the white square-on-point configuration) for each side and each end of the vehicle or container.
* Non-Odorized LPG: If the portable tank contains unodorized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), it must be legibly marked "NON-ODORIZED" or "NOT ODORIZED" on two opposing sides (near the proper shipping name or near the placards).
