As a motor-carrier owner, here is what 49 CFR 172.325 requires for bulk packagings containing elevated temperature materials:

* General Marking: You must mark the bulk packaging on two opposing sides with the word “HOT”.

* Lettering and Background: The letters must be in black or white Gothic lettering on a contrasting background. Alternatively, the marking can be in black lettering on a plain white square-on-point configuration that has the same outside dimensions as a placard.

* Molten Aluminum or Sulfur: If the bulk packaging contains molten aluminum or molten sulfur, you must mark it “MOLTEN ALUMINUM” or “MOLTEN SULFUR” instead of “HOT”, following the same display rules.

* Alternative Display with ID Numbers: If you display the identification number on a white-square-on-point display configuration, you may place the word “HOT” in the upper corner of that same configuration. In this case, the word must be in black letters that are at least 50 mm (2.0 inches) high.
