As an Ask X3 fleet-compliance assistant, here is what is required according to 49 CFR 180.605:
If you own a portable tank constructed under a DOT specification that has a test or inspection due, you must test or inspect it before returning it to transportation.
Additionally, according to 49 CFR 180.605, you must test and inspect your portable tank prior to further use (regardless of regular schedules) if any of the following conditions occur:
* The tank shows dents, corrosion, abrasions, leaks, or any other unsafe condition.
* The tank has been in an accident and damaged in a way that may affect its ability to hold hazardous materials.
* The tank has been out of hazardous materials transportation service for one year or more.
* The tank has been modified from its original design specification.
* The tank is in an unsafe operating condition.
Periodic Inspection and Test Schedules:
* IM or UN portable tanks: Must have an initial inspection and test before use, a periodic test at least every 5 years, and an intermediate test at least every 2.5 years.
* Specification 51 portable tanks: Must be tested and inspected at least once every 5 years.
* Specification 56 or 57 portable tanks: Must be tested and inspected at least once every 2.5 years.
* Specification 60 portable tanks: Must be tested and inspected at the end of the first 4-year period after the original test, at least every 2 years thereafter up to 12 years of service, and at least annually after that (rubber-lined tanks do not need retesting except before each relining).
