According to 49 CFR 180.515, when a tank car passes a required inspection and test with acceptable results, the tank car facility must mark the tank car with the inspection date and the due date of the next qualified inspection and test, following the applicable provisions of Appendix C of the AAR Specifications for Tank Cars.
Here is what you need to know for practical compliance under 49 CFR 180.515:
* Multiple Tests: If multiple inspections and tests are performed at the same time, or if they share the same due date, you may use just one date to satisfy these requirements.
* Consolidated Stencil: Dates shown on the "consolidated stencil" take precedence over dates that were modified (but not stenciled) due to interval adjustments for service equipment, linings, and granted alternative inspection intervals.
* Converted Tank Cars: If you have converted DOT 105, 109, 112, 114, or 120 class tank cars, you must permanently mark the new specification and conversion date on the outside of the manway nozzle (or the edge of the manway nozzle flange on the left side of the car). These letters and figures must be at least 0.95 cm (0.375 inch) high. (You are allowed to omit the last numeral of the specification number, such as writing "DOT 111A100W" instead of "DOT 111A100W1").
* Pressure Relief Devices: If a reclosing pressure relief device is qualified within six months of installation and protected from deterioration, its test date marking is considered the installation date on the tank car.
