What does 49 CFR 178.802 (Preparation of fiberboard IBCs for testing) require?

Generated guidance. Confirm the source and its applicability before you act. How we check sources.

According to 49 CFR 178.802, fiberboard Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) and composite IBCs with fiberboard outer packagings must be conditioned for at least 24 hours before testing.

You must condition them in an atmosphere maintained under one of the following two sets of conditions:

1. Option 1: 50 percent ±2 percent relative humidity, and a temperature of 23° ±2 °C (73 °F ±4 °F).

2. Option 2: 65 percent ±2 percent relative humidity, and a temperature of either 20° ±2 °C (68 °F ±4 °F) or 27 °C ±2 °C (81 °F ±4 °F).

Practical guidelines for your operation:

* Ensure the *average* temperature and humidity stay within these required limits.

* Short-term fluctuations and measurement limitations are allowed to cause individual humidity measurements to vary by up to ±5 percent without ruining the test.

* Exception: If you are only doing periodic design requalification, the fiberboard IBCs or composite IBCs with fiberboard outer packagings are allowed to be at ambient conditions.
