According to 49 CFR 173.447, when managing temporary storage during transport (excluding Nuclear Regulatory Commission or Agreement State-licensed facilities and U.S. Government-owned or contracted facilities), you must follow these requirements:
* Limit the Criticality Safety Index: In any single storage area (such as a terminal building, transit area, storeroom, assembly yard, or waterfront pier), you must limit the number of packages and overpacks bearing FISSILE labels so that the total sum of their criticality safety indices in any individual group does not exceed 50.
* Maintain Separation Spacing: You must store groups of these fissile packages and overpacks so there is a distance of at least 6 meters (20 feet) between each group.
* Vessel Transport: Storage requirements for Class 7 (radioactive) materials transported by vessels are covered separately under subpart M of part 176 of this subchapter.
