According to 49 CFR 173.337, nitric oxide must be packaged in cylinders conforming to § 173.40 and the following requirements:
* DOT Specification Cylinders: You may use DOT 3A1800, 3AA1800, 3E1800, or 3AL1800 cylinders.
* Charge these cylinders to a pressure of no more than 5,170 kPa (750 psi) at 21 °C (70 °F).
* Transporting nitric oxide in a DOT 3AL cylinder is only authorized by highway and rail.
* UN Cylinders: You may use a UN cylinder with a minimum test pressure of 200 bar, provided the maximum working pressure does not exceed 50 bar.
* The pressure in the cylinder at 65 °C (149 °F) cannot exceed the test pressure.
* UN tubes and MEGCs are not authorized.
* Valves: Cylinders must have a stainless steel valve and valve seat that will not deteriorate when in contact with nitric oxide. Cylinders and valves cannot have pressure relief devices of any type.
* Cleaning Requirements:
* UN cylinders must be cleaned per ISO 11621.
* DOT specification cylinders must be cleaned per GSA Federal Specification RR-C-901D (paragraphs 3.3.1 and 3.3.2), or with equivalent cleaning agents that cannot react with oxygen.
* For DOT cylinders, you must randomly test one cylinder out of every group of 200 or fewer cleaned at the same time for oil contamination, following Federal Specification RR-C-901D paragraph 4.3.2, and it must meet that standard of cleanliness.
