According to 49 CFR 173.314, tank car tanks containing compressed gases must follow these general requirements:

* Ownership Consent: They must not be shipped unless loaded by or with the consent of the tank owner.

* Chemical Compatibility: Tanks must not contain gases capable of combining chemically, and they cannot be loaded with any gas that combines chemically with a previously loaded gas until all residue is completely removed and the tank interior is thoroughly cleaned.

* DOT-106A and 110A Class Tanks: These specific tanks must be placed in position and attached to the car structure by the shipper.

* Gaskets and Seals: Each tank car transporting anhydrous ammonia or any material meeting Division 2.1 or 2.3 criteria must use manway cover plate and fitting-mounting gaskets designed specifically for temperature, application, media, pressure, and size. They must create a positive seal to prevent an identifiable release of material to the environment under normal transport conditions. The use of sealants to install these gaskets is strictly prohibited.

* Filling and Transport: Compressed gases in tank cars or multi-unit tank cars must be offered for transportation in accordance with § 173.31 and the specific filling limits, authorized tank car classes, and specifications listed in the regulation table.
