As Ask X3, your fleet-compliance assistant, here is what 49 CFR 173.193 requires for motor carriers transporting these specific hazardous materials:
* For Bromoacetone (in boxes): You must pack it in metal boxes (4A, 4B, or 4N) or wooden boxes (4C1, 4C2, 4D, or 4F) using inner glass receptacles or tubes placed inside hermetically sealed metal receptacles within corrugated fiberboard cartons.
* Individual bottles cannot hold more than 500 g (17.6 ounces) of liquid.
* Bottles must be cushioned inside cans using at least 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) of absorbent material.
* The total liquid weight in a single outer box cannot exceed 11 kg (24 pounds).
* Outer packagings must meet Packing Group I performance standards under part 178.
* For Cylinders (Bromoacetone, methyl bromide, chloropicrin and methyl bromide/methyl chloride mixtures, etc.): When shipping these in cylinders, you must use Specification 3A, 3AA, 3B, 3C, 3E, 4A, 4B, 4BA, 4BW, or 4C cylinders.
* These cylinders must have a nominal water capacity of no more than 113 kg (250 pounds), *except* that DOT Specification 4BW cylinders containing chloropicrin and methyl bromide mixtures can go up to 453 kg (1000 pounds), and the capacity limit does not apply to shipments of methyl bromide.
* Except for cylinders containing methyl bromide, all cylinders must conform to § 173.40.
* For Methyl Bromide Mixtures (containing up to 2% chloropicrin): You must package these in 4G fiberboard boxes containing inside metal cans.
* One-pound cans: Must hold no more than one pound each, withstand an internal pressure of at least 130 psig without leaking or distorting, and hold contents with a vapor pressure no exceeding 130 psig at 55 °C (130 °F).
* 1 3/4-pound cans: Must have a minimum wall thickness of 0.007 inch, hold no more than 1 3/4 pounds each, withstand an internal pressure of at least 140 psig without leaking or distorting, and hold contents with a vapor pressure not exceeding 140 psig at 55 °C (130 °F).
* All cans: Must not be liquid full at 130 °F, must be constructed of tinplate or properly lined, and must feature concave or pressure ends.
