What does 49 CFR 173.162 (Gallium) require?

Generated guidance. Confirm the source and its applicability before you act. How we check sources.

According to 49 CFR 173.162, except when packaged in cylinders or steel flasks, gallium must be packaged in containers that meet the Part 178 requirements at the Packing Group III performance level for highway transport (and Packing Group I for aircraft).

You may use the following packaging options:

1. Combination packagings for liquids: Use glass, earthenware, or rigid plastic inner packagings (maximum net mass of 15 kg or 33 lbs each) packed into approved outer boxes (wood, fiberboard, plastic) or drums/jerricans (fiber, steel, metal other than steel/aluminum, or plastic) with enough cushioning to prevent breakage. Either the inner or outer packaging must include a leakproof inner liner or a strong, leakproof, puncture-resistant bag impervious to the contents.

2. Semi-rigid plastic inner packagings: Use semi-rigid plastic inner packagings (not more than 2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs net capacity each), individually enclosed in a sealed, leak-tight, puncture-resistant bag. These sealed bags must be packed in approved wooden, plywood, reconstituted wood, fiberboard, plastic, or metal (other than steel or aluminum) boxes, or in fiber, steel, metal (other than steel/aluminum), or plastic drums lined with leak-tight, puncture-resistant material. Bags and liners must be chemically resistant to gallium.

3. Cylinders and steel flasks: Cylinders and steel flasks with vaulted bottoms are also authorized.

Additional requirements:

* If you need to transport gallium at low temperatures to keep it solid, you can overpack these packagings in a strong, water-resistant outer packaging containing dry ice or another refrigerant. All packaging materials must be chemically and physically resistant to the refrigerant and retain impact resistance at low temperatures. If you use dry ice, the outer packaging must allow carbon dioxide gas to escape.

* Manufactured articles or apparatuses containing not more than 100 mg of gallium per article (and not more than 1 g per package) are exempt from these subchapter requirements.
