As a motor-carrier owner, here is what 49 CFR 172.502 requires regarding placarding:

Prohibited Placarding:

You cannot put or display any hazard placard on a packaging, freight container, unit load device, motor vehicle, or rail car *unless*:

* The material being transported is actually a hazardous material.

* The placard accurately represents the hazard of the material being transported.

* The placarding fully conforms to the requirements of the placarding subpart.

Additionally, you cannot display any sign, advertisement, slogan (like "Drive Safely"), or device that could be confused with an official hazard placard due to its color, design, shape, or content.

Permissive Placarding:

You are allowed to display placards for a hazardous material even when they are not strictly required, provided that the placards still conform to all the requirements of the placarding subpart.

*(Note: Certain exceptions apply for vehicles placarded under specific international standards like TDG, IMDG, or UN Recommendations, or for specific authorized markings like BIOHAZARD or "HOT".)*
