What does 49 CFR 172.338 (Replacement of identification numbers) require?
Generated guidance. Confirm the source and its applicability before you act. How we check sources.
According to 49 CFR 172.338, if more than one required identification number marking on your placards, orange panels, or white square-on-point displays is lost, damaged, or destroyed during transport, your motor carrier business must replace all of those missing or damaged numbers as soon as practicable.
To meet this requirement practically on the road:
* You may write the correct identification numbers by hand onto the appropriate placard, orange panel, or white square-on-point display.
* You must write them legibly using an indelible (permanent) marking material.
* The handwritten numbers must be placed in the designated white display area specified in 49 CFR 172.332.
Doing this does not excuse you from complying with any other required placarding rules under Subpart F.
